Hi Shelby, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today. Like many individuals, my life as a digital nomad started because of COVID. I had a corporate job as a Marketing Specialist for a design firm in San Francisco. I used to work a ton of overtime until the world went into lockdown; I was laid off with thousands of other employees.
My sister, mentor, client, and close friend, Laura Ashley Todd of Laura Ashley Catering, encouraged me to start my own agency offering entrepreneurs affordable website redesign services, branding, and marketing services. Thus, Creative Compass was born and my mission since 2020 has been to help small businesses find their true north.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome? Starting my own marketing agency has been an awesome experience. As a designer, I can always find improvements to make and I often go back into clients’ websites to make them better. One struggle I realized early on was owning my worth. I think imposter syndrome is a struggle many entrepreneurs have to overcome and when we do we’re able to do our best work.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work? I love helping entrepreneurs start businesses! The branding process is so rewarding to me because I help guide clients on establishing their name, logo, graphics, website, and content, and announce it to their network through an eblast. Many web designers charge exorbitant prices for all this but I am able to charge a fraction of the cost due to low overhead. I can also turn branding and web design projects around within a month if the client is responsive and on board with the creative process.
What does success mean to you? Success is freedom. If you have all the money in the world but no free time or autonomy what is the point?
